About

Hello, welcome to On The Hem! I'm delighted you found my special place.  I’m Susan, a seamstress at the root of On The Hem. You'll usually find me in my sewing studio, where I create, hold fittings, and sell a small collection of handmade gifts, accessories, and retail items. My love for sewing began when I was gifted a machine over 30 years ago. My experience over the years came through a mix of sewing ventures, classes, mentors, and sewing for a winter apparel design and the outdoor gear industry. I also enjoyed touring and working with the Minnesota Ballet, assisting with fittings and alterations for two seasons.  I delight in replicating and restoring clothing from the past for clients and historical society.

Sewing to me is meditative, quiet, and collective. It at times has its challenges, but for the most part very rewarding. I take pride in my work and love seeing the reaction of clients when they see or try an item specifically altered or restyled. When I’m not at my machine or have needle and thread in hand, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling, hiking, and in a kayak, canoe, or boat.

Susan was extremely helpful. I will use her for all my alterations and tailoring. She does great work with custom patterns as well. Beautiful hemming and completed in a timely manner. Professional and very responsive.
